Note: There is a lot of info on this page, and on pages it links to. If you are in a hurry, and just want to know WHAT TO DO about improving your diet, click here to read my article. This is a summary of all the info on this page. For more details, read on below.....
Importance and Role of food in Health The importance of food and the role it plays in our health is largely overlooked. Beyond paying lipservice to it, very few people actually put into practice even what they know is good for them. Nutrition is not even an important part of the medical doctor;s training - I believe it is one part of the subject "Social Medicine" in one of the papers of one of the semesters. Much information on what is good nutrition is also "sponsored" by vested interests - Eg the "Eat more eggs" campaign conducted by the National Egg Co-ordination Committee. So this section of the site will focus on what good food really is.
It is estimated that over 70-80% of our diseases are related directly our indirectly to our diet. It is in the area of food and diet that we unknowingly commit the most frequent and great transgressions to natural laws, that adversely affect our health. Most of our chronic health problems can be done away with if only we were to make our diet more natural. Isn't that a sufficient reason for Natural Hygienists to focus so much on food?
Ayurveda, the 5000+ year old science of health, has long recognized many facts about nutrition that even modern doctors may ot now. Check the article in the links section alongside. Even the American Dietetic Association says that "The role of nutrition and diet in promoting health and reducing chronic disease for conditions ranging from preventing low birth weight to weight reduction, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and dietary intervention in cancer prevention and control has been well established. ". Read the article alongside for more information
Principles of Good Food What is good food and what is not? The hygienic perspective has been unchanged for the past two hundred years. In fact, hygienists have evolved a comprehensive evaluation system which enables you to objectively rate the quality of a food. You can then compare different foods and see which food is better. Click here for more
Fruits & Vegetables Of all the various foods available for human beings to eat, raw fruits and vegetables remain the prime and best choice from every possible perspective. But do you really know all you need to about fruits and vegetables. How to eat them? How not to? How much to eat? Which ones to eat? And what are all the health benefits of eating them?
Water and Other Fluids Even though water is not a food, it is of primary importance to us since over 70% of our body is composed of water. We can leave without food for even forty days, (I have lived for 31!) but without water for few days we can die. But what is the best source of water for us? How much should we drink? What is the quality of the water we get normally? Do you know what are the poisons inside a glass of tap water? What about mineral waters? Soft drinks? Fruit Juices? Coconut water? Click for more
Nuts and Sprouts Nuts and sprouts are one of the finest sources of proteins for human beings - rivalling even the much touted meats and fishes. And in fact they have none of toxins and other problems associated with animal products. But how much protein do we need? What happens if we eat more? Can we manage purely on nuts and sprouts? How much will we need to eat? And how. For answers to these and many other knotty (nutty?) questions, click here
Grains and lentils Rice and/or wheat are the staple foods for over 90% of the world's population. But is this guided by health considerations or commercial considerations? How good do they rate as foods? Are they an ideal food? What portion of our diet should comprise of grains and lentils? Click here for some surprising facts about grains and lentils..
Animal products A significant part of the world's population routinely eat animal products such as meat, fish & eggs at least once a day. In fact it is widely considered that this food is good for heath, especially necessary for obtaining your protein requirements. But how many people know the true answers to these questions? 1. Are human beings suited to a diet high in animal products, physiologically, anatomically and otherwise? 2. Do you know all the effects of such a diet on your health? 3. Do you know all the arguments for excluding these products from your diet?
Milk and Milk Products Strictly speaking, milk and milk products like yoghurt, cheese, butter etc come under the category of animal products. They come from an animal. They don't grow on trees. That much is obvious but still not accepted. That's why milk merits a separate section, all on its own. Almost all vegetarians consume milk, and for many of them (especially Indians and mothers), milk is a holy cow (!). They will do anything, believe anything except accept that milk is anything less than an ideal food for humans especially children. But is this the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Click here to find out.
Cooked food v/s raw food Almost all of us have been brought up on a diet of predominantly cooked food. Fire has been burning in the kitchens from time immemorial. But what is the effect of subjecting our foods to the effects of fire? On the foods and on our health? There is no denying that it is very difficult (and perhaps not even desirable) to eliminate cooked food from our diet. But we ought to know the importance of raw foods in our diet and try to increase the percentage of raw foods consumed, gradually, to as much as is practically possible. Click for more
Processed food How much of your food comes from a can, jar, bottle or packet of some kind? How much of your food has been processed, refined, fortified, modified, preserved, enhanced in a factory before reaching your dining table? Do you know what EXACTLY you are getting when you are eating processed food? And do you know the effects of eating a diet high in processed foods? Click here to find out
Junk food Luckily the deleterious effects of "junk food" or "fast food" are coming to light even in the conventional health and nutrition communities. It is no one's case that these are the healthiest of foods. Unfortunately, after being rejected as healthy food in the West, these foods are making a backdoor entry into developing countries like India. And what's more, they are being lapped up, especially by the younger generation for reasons other than health and nutrition. Click here for details.
Microwaved Food Do you know that a Swiss Scientist, Dr. Henreich Hertel, came to the conclusion after scientific studies, TEN YEARS AGO, that consumption of microwaved food created changes in blood chemistry similar to those on the onset of cancer? And that the electrical industry filed a case against him in the Swiss Courts and prevented him from making his findings public for TEN YEARS? And that recently he has won his appeal, the Swiss government has been fined. Click here for more.
Irradiated Food The nuclear lobby after the embargo on nuclear weapons and also having failed in many countries of providing a significant quantity of power, safely, efficiently and cost effectively, is now desperately searching for reasons to justify its continued existence. It has hit upon the idea of irradiating our food to preserve it from decay. But what happens to a food when it is irradiated? Have sufficient studies been done on the safety of these foods? Does a consumer have a right to know if the food he is eating is irradiated or not?
Genetically modified food The latest threat being foisted down the throats (literally) of unsuspecting consumers. But what exactly is this food? How safe is it? How many tests have been performed on its safety. Click here for details
Other enemies of health Sorry, we are not done yet. Click here to find out what else on your supper table is a potential threat to your health.
Health Food As a reaction to the assualt on our foods by unhealthy food, a huge number of "health food stores" have mushroomed up all over the world. And they are becoming more and more popular. Even fashionable. Healthy is in. Undisputably, some of the foods available in these stores is superior to conventional options. But is all of it truly "health food"? Do you really need to pay a fortune to eat healthily? Click here to learn more
Changing your diet OK so your'e convinced. So how do you go about changing your diet. A drastic change at one shot or slow and steady? What should you do first? Which change is more important to implement? What are the problems you are likely to come across and how to overcome them? How far to go? These are some of the issues addressed in this section. Click here for more.
Common Concerns You must be having a lot of concerns and questions on what would happen to you if you adopted the recommendations here. What about protein? Calcium? Vitamins? Muscle? Strength? Calories? Click here to assuage your doubts.
Guidelines to embrace You may be overwhelmed by the mass of information provided in this section. So where do you go from here? What do you do? What changes do you make in your diet? What rules do you live by? Click here to find out some common-sense guidelines to embrace to have the maximum positive impact on your health.
An ideal diet Why is this the last point on the agenda? Should it not have been the first? Why not prescribe the ideal diet for everyone? Why go through all the bother in the preceding sections? Why not just lay down menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, for every day of the week. Why not just give a list of do's and don'ts? Click here to find out.
